A number of activities to raise awareness about gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence will take place across Vietnam in the second half of November and the first half of December.

On November 15, the National Action Month On Gender Equality and Prevention Of Violence Against Women And Girls was launched with the theme "Join hands to stop violence against women and children". A wide range of activities, events and communication campaigns will be organized across the country to attract the attention and participation of individuals and organizations. This includes promoting legal education and strengthening women and children‘s knowledge and skills in self-protection to reduce violence against women and girls, especially sexual abuse.

Vietnam's Action Month comes in response to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 (also known as White Ribbon Day), which also marks the start of the 16th Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, launched by the United Nations. This humanitarian campaign will culminate on December 10, International Human Rights Day.

Gender-based violence, especially domestic violence, has been a serious problem in Vietnam for many years. According to the National Survey on Domestic Violence (2010), 58% of ever-married women say they have experienced at least one form of violence (physical, sexual or emotional) in their lifetime. However, 87% of them will never seek help.

As a direct support unit for survivors of gender-based violence, CWD has supported more than 10,000 women through its counseling services, and provided temporary accommodation to more than 1,000 survivors through the Peace House Shelter. CWD also plays an active role in strengthening coordination with relevant ministries and agencies in survivor assistance and advocacy; organizing communication activities to raise awareness of the issues, especially community consultation; organizing activities to share experiences, build capacity for a number of key provinces, and monitor and train students.

In response to the National Action Month, CWD will coordinate with the UN Agency for Gender Equality and Empowerment (UN Women) to host its third annual White Ribbon Breakfast on November 24. This year’s theme is "Men cooperate to ensure the safety and justice for women and children who experience GBV". Around 100 delegates from various agencies will participate in the event, which will conclude with a signing ceremony for a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in legal counseling and support for women and children who experience GBV between CWD and the Center for Legal Counseling, Vietnam Bar Federation.

In addition, CWD will launch a campaign to support the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign on Facebook. To join with CWD and participate in this movement, you can share our articles published on Peace House Shelter’s Facebook Page, or buy a White Ribbon, wristband or handmade product made by the residents of Peace House Shelter at Peace Coffee and Peace Shop. All proceeds will be used to support Peace House Shelter.
